The time has come... Most of the children went back to school today full of enthusiasm. Some for the first time, others to the next class. A new school year brings new opportunities and possibilities. While they may have secretly longed for a little extra vacation, the first day of school is always exciting. We hope everything went well for everyone.
With the start of a new school year, the time has also come for innovations in the nursery. A fresh makeover perhaps? A new bed, a different cupboard or a fresh lick of paint on the walls? And how about a (new) desk? Now that your child will get more and more homework, they will also spend more and more time in their own room. How great would it be if they had a special place there to quietly work on their tasks?
The Perfect Desk
Choosing the right desk can be a challenge. You may be wondering what height we are talking about and whether your child actually needs a desk. In this blog we answer all your questions.
Learning good habits can start at a young age. Introducing a table or desk into their bedroom or playroom helps them get used to sitting at a table and chair while doing different activities such as painting, drawing or reading. So, even at a young age, a desk or table with a chair or stool can be very helpful.
The Ideal Height
The correct height of the desk depends on the age and height of your child. When sitting at the desk, both feet should be flat on the floor, with hips and knees at a 90° angle. The child's knees should not touch the tabletop when their feet are on the floor. Then you know you have the right height. Back support is just as important, so opt for a chair with a backrest rather than a stool. However, a stool can be useful when they are younger and don't sit for long periods of time.
Although a lot of information can be found online about the ideal height of children's desks, it is difficult to link specific ages to heights, as every child grows at his or her own pace. Here's a general guideline:
- Height child 90 - 109 cm (2-4 years) - height table <52 cm
- Height child 110 - 120 cm (5-6 years) - height table 52 cm
- Height child 121 - 130 cm (6-8 years) - height table 57 cm
- Height child 131 - 145 cm (8-10 years) - height table 64 cm
- Height child 146 - 160 cm (11 - 13 years) - height table 70 cm
- Height child from 160 cm or longer (14 years and older) - height table >75 cm
However , now you often don't find so many types of desks with these different heights. Standard dimensions are often used, such as a height of 50 cm for children up to about 6 years old and 75 cm for children from 6 years old. Because children grow quickly, many parents opt for a sustainable option: a desk that they can grow into and that grows with them. An adjustable desk may also be a practical and sustainable choice.
Age groups
For children over 6 years old, a desk in the nursery is an absolute 'must-have' for homework and other creative activities. Although they like to use their room for more than just school work, the desk really becomes an essential part at this age. Of course, this doesn't mean that younger children don't benefit from a desk. Even from about 2 years old, a special place to draw, do puzzles and read books can be very useful.
Variety and Style
Desks are available in different types, sizes (desktop surface) and with or without storage space. The choice obviously depends on your budget and personal style.
